A. — PHYS. Inverse de la distance focale d'un système optique centré. Le verre de lunettes doit changer la vergence des faisceaux de rayons dirigés vers l'œil de façon que celui-ci puisse mettre au point sur la rétine les images des objets observés. C'est pourquoi on peut dire que les verres de lunettes sont des transformateurs de vergence (Encyclop. Sc. Techn. t. 7 1972, p. 411, s.v. lunetterie).
B. — OPHTALMOL. ,,Mouvement des deux yeux dans lequel les axes visuels cessent d'être parallèles; ils peuvent se rapprocher (convergence) ou s'éloigner (divergence)`` (MAN.-MAN. Méd. 1986).
